Local Food Shopping

We will start with supermarkets so that you can see that we have a full range and that all convenience goods can be purchased nearby. Please though do look at the local shops and stores listed. These provide some fantastic produce, and it is often the case that it is no more expensive than the supermarkets, but in the case of meat fish and vegetables, both fresher and better quality.

There is a Waitrose about 6 miles away on the A3052 to Exeter. You drive through Sidford; Go straight over the traffic lights and the supermarket is a mile on your left. A growing amount of local produce. Waitrose deliver.

Sainsburys, Ottery St Mary

Again about six miles away. Ottery is easy to get to, turn right at top of drive, straight over crossroads at Hare and Hounds. Once in Ottery follow one way, turn right as one way ends, and right again. You can park in car park whilst you go to fishmongers, butchers and local vegetbale shop. No local produce of any note. Sainsbury’s deliver.

Tesco, Honiton and Seaton
There is a Tesco in Honiton and one in Seaton, no local food to mention, little to no customer service and a preference for you to use the self serve tills, we suppose it takes all sorts. They deliver.

Lidl’s and Aldi Honiton

Now to the really good stuff

Beer Fish Shop. Beer
This is situated on the approach to the beach in Beer just below the play area which is opposite the Anchor Inn. They offer a growing selection of seafood. The crab and lobsters are from the beach as is some of the fish. Ready prepared crabmeat is a specialty and the scallops from the bay are fresh and delicious.

Otter Produce: Ottery St Mary
Right in the centre of Ottery St Mary, next to the KM Butchers. Good selection of fruit, vegetables and herbs and generally much fresher and cheaper than that served in the nearby Sainsbury’s. Much of it is local.

Ottery St Mary Fish shop
Just in the one way system along from KM Butchers and Otter Produce, park in Sainsbury’s and cut through. Good selection and early saturday afternoon a good time as lots of special offers.

KM Butchers in Ottery st Mary
Right in the centre of Ottery, near Otter Produce. Really good local butcher with award-winning sausages and good bacon. Try their fabulous pork and spinach sausages.

The Honiton Fishmongers. Honiton
Situated at the High Street end of New Street in Honiton, this fish shop offers a fairly wide selection of fish and seafood, most from local sources as well as smoked produce from Bridport.

Colyton Butchers
This is the butcher that we use the most. Fantastic local beef, properly hung, and award winning sausages are just some of the offerings. It’s a bit bit further away but worth it. To find them, head on the road to Lyme Regis until you see the sign to Colyton, the butcher is situated in the main square near the church. Closes mid afternoon and at lunchtimes, so get there early.

Complete Meats
Complete Meats is situated on Honiton High Street. They offer a wide selection of local meats and packs ready for the barbeque as well as a reasonable cheese counter.

Fowlers Chicken Farm
When our chickens are not laying we buy from the chicken farm on the left before the Hare and Hounds. Turn right out of our drive and it is 2 miles on the left. It has an honesty box so take change.

Greendale Farm Shop
About fifteen to twenty minutes away but a real foodies heaven. Head towards Exeter on the A3052 and it’s on the left after Newton Poppleford. The biggest fish counter in the South West has just won fishmonger of the year, huge selection of farm and local produce and some real gems. Worth going and choosing what you’re going to eat from what’s available rather than with a shopping list. We always drop in on our way back from Exeter.
